Enjoy Mexican food without the stomachache

Mexican food is a staple of many of our diets, but so are the trips to the bathroom afterward.

One way to find out what aspect of Mexican food is bothering your innards the most is through an elimination diet, in which you eliminate one ingredient at a time. Here is what Livestrong.com says about possible culprits.

• Beans, one of the most common ingredients in Mexican dishes, are high in fiber, which could produce diarrhea if you eat large amounts. Scaling back might provide relief.

• Some people may be sensitive to spicy food, and eating it could cause diarrhea. Spices that are suspect include chili powder, cayenne pepper, paprika and black pepper.

• Fatty and greasy meals also can cause diarrhea, so eat lean meats with vegetables and limit fatty cuts of meat, as well as cheese and sour cream.

• Cheese and sour cream, both of which are dairy products, can cause diarrhea for another reason - lactose intolerance.

• If you are gluten intolerant or have celiac disease, flour tortillas might cause diarrhea. Stick to corn tortillas, which typically are gluten free.
